Velké Dářko: the “Sea of Vysočina”, sandy shores and windsurfing in the Žďárské vrchy Highlands

Velké Dářko is the largest pond in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and one of Vysočina’s best-known swimming spots, with sandy and grassy shores, shallow peat-coloured water, campsites, refreshments, sailing, windsurfing, paddleboards, peat-bog walks and cycling trips.

Velké Dářko is often called the “Sea of Vysočina”, and for a highland pond the nickname makes sense. It has a broad open water surface, wind, sandy and grassy shores, campsites, boats, windsurfers and forested Žďárské vrchy scenery.

The water is naturally brownish because of the peat substrate, so low transparency is normal here. This does not automatically mean the water is dirty, but you should always check the current hygiene rating before swimming.

Why visit

Velké Dářko is a good choice if you want natural swimming with a highland character rather than a pool or quarry. It combines swimming, water sports, cycling and walks through nearby peat-bog reserves.

Swimming

The shores are partly sandy and partly grassy, with generally gradual entry and shallow water. The busiest and most practical first point is near the dam and campsite area, where refreshments and facilities are easiest to find.

Nudist beach

Practical swimming sources list a nudist section at Velké Dářko, but descriptions of its exact location differ. Check the current situation on site and be considerate.

Watch out for

Wind can be strong and the water is used by windsurfers and sailors. With children, choose a clear and sheltered part of the shore.

Summary

Velké Dářko is one of the strongest natural swimming places in Vysočina: a large peat-coloured pond, beaches, water sports, campsites, cycling routes and protected highland nature.
